Why are so many people angry about this election? Some people are afraid and many Christians are terrified. Ask a Christian if they believe in God and they may square their shoulders, give you a determined look and reply “Absolutely!” They may even look confused and wonder why you asked.
Yet, take the conversation one step further. “Do you believe in Miracles?” Most Christians will smile, shuffle their feet, look around the room and respond with a half hearted, “Uh…yes?”
My grandparents and parents saw and participated in miracles. I have witnessed miracles up close and personal. They were confident that God could do anything – ANYTHING – and would do anything to save his people. There’s an old song that says, Prayer is the Key to Heaven but Faith unlocks the door.
When you pray you must believe that God will answer and if necessary that HE will create a Miracle to further His will. Not for your selfish desires (will post more on this later) but for His Will and His purpose for us.
This election has many people terrified. When we talk about the things that make us afraid, some people have admitted they have a hard time praying. “I believe in God but I’m wondering if he really answers prayer. Maybe he isn’t really that involved.” I’ve argued that God is still on the Throne and that he is involved in our lives. Yet, I understand their fear. There are time when my own nervous hands reveal the fear in my own heart.
We have been safe in America for a long time. Now it seems the safety we’ve depended on is crumbling around us. Add to that the violence that seems to plague every aspect of public life and even the most devout Christian can feel anxious or afraid.
I admired my dad and the way he could cut through the foolishness and get to the heart of the matter. I loved his analytical mind and the great phrases he created to gently lead people into God’s truth. Feeling a bit overwhelmed today, I browsed through a list of his sermon notes. On the topic “Prayer Works” he wrote.
“To say that you believe in prayer and don’t believe in miracles is the most egregious kind of contradiction. If you say you believe that you can speak and somewhere the God who created the universe can hear….then you already believe in the most astounding miracle of all.”
I sat back in my chair as the air in my lungs slowly leaked out. I gasped as the tears began to trickle down my cheeks. A smile peeked through droplets. “Of course…..of course.” In my mind I saw my prayer for help floating upward and then rushing at warp speed toward the sky, through the stars and into the black of space. Speeding past suns and moons. Pushing at light speed my one prayer sped like a bolt of lightning upward….faster….into the next universe and beyond until it came at last to a halting stop at the ears of God. “Debbie is afraid! She needs help!” God turned his head and listened to my plea. “Oh Dear God, please help us. Please protect us. I’m so afraid. Please Help America. America needs you.”
Dad was right. If one prayer can make that kind of journey and attract the mind of God – the miracle is already complete! The miracle has happened. I am positive that if we join together and pray for this country – miracles will continue to happen! Join me…..
“Heavenly Father, I join with all my readers to praise you and to thank you for all that you’ve done for us. Thank you for a country that allows me to worship you. Thank you for a medium like the internet where I can connect with friends and pray together with them. We love you and ask today that you help us know how to help our country. Help us to see the truth in this election and to vote for your candidate. Help us discover the lies and see each candidate through your eyes. We believe that you can do miracles and that you can bring America back to your will.
Forgive us of our sins and help us to live as you would have us to live.
This country began on the belief that your way was the best way. Please help America to return to that belief. Please send a miraculous revival to America. Please guide the Christian mind and help us to further your will in this election. We give you all praise and glory. Please God, Please bless America.”
Join me here again tomorrow.
